Harbor Friendly Lawn Care Lecture
Thursday, April 24, 7:30 p.m.
Frank Crandall, owner of Wood River Evergreens, will outline an organic
lawn and landscape maintenance program that is safe to use along harbors
and watersheds. The free lecture is part of CUSH’s 2008 “Harbor
Friendly Yard” campaign and will be held Thursday, April 24 at
7:30 p.m. at the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club, 186 1⁄2 Water Street,
Stonington Borough.
Frank and six of his employees
have received Northeastern Organic Farming Association (NOFA) Land Care
Accreditation after completing a tough five-day course covering design,
construction, and maintenance of ecological landscapes. His lecture
will discuss lawn and soil bioassay testing, organic fertilizers, compost,
compost tea, and NOFA accepted weed and insect control methods.
“Almost 50 percent
of our clients have requested organic lawn care and another 15-20 percent
have expressed an interest,” says Crandall. “Nearly all
Wood River Evergreen’s commercial clients have gone organic. Because
of the many environmental and health concerns, we feel it’s the
right thing to do.”
The company’s three
year goal is to totally "go green," eliminating use of all
synthetic pesticides, recycling all plastic nursery pots, collecting
and recycling runoff water for irrigation in the nursery, adopting alternative
energy sources (wind, solar, water), and replacing vehicles with hybrids
as they become available. To contact Mr. Crandall, call (401) 364-3387;
