The intention of this design is to retain the shoreline
flavor by planting trees, shrubs and grasses which may have originally
been there. This is not the main home of the client and so a low-maintenance
planting was another priority.
Red cedars, Japanese black pine, American holly
and Leylandi cypress comprise the main tree population in the field.
A few shad are added to tie in with existing trees. Splashed around
for seasonal interest (texture, color) is fragrant sumac, staghorn
sumac and bayberry, three extremely beautiful, successful and tolerant
native shrubs. A coastal seed mix was used to establish a functional
lawn.
Mugo pine was added in groupings for a ground level
of coniferous texture. There is a strong evergreen presence combined
with Inkberry. For another textural component, heaths and heathers
were added in highly visual areas (around the circular driveway) and
for movement, pennisetum grasses with their late seanal "flowers." |
